The Seven Deadly Sins Series - Part 1, Envy/Jealousy

Image
In this series, we will take a look at the seven deadly sins split into their own blog, to briefly dissect their meaning, harms and what Allah and Ahlul Bayt(as) have to say regarding them. Many faiths, including that of the major Abrahamic faiths, being Islam, Christianity and Judaism, all share the same view regarding the seven deadly sins, otherwise knows as the capital vices.  Although in Islam, we have what is known as the "Greater Sins/Major Sins", one thing for sure, this we all share a common view.  In today's blog, we will briefly touch on Envy and attempt to understand it a little further so that we may know how to identify it, and how to stay away from it.  The first question we must ask is, what is envy? According to the dictionary, Envy means "A feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else possessions, qualities or luck". Basically that is to say, one is not satisfied with what they have and further to this, they desp...

Does God exist? (P1)

So which of your Lord’s marvels will you deny? (Sura Rahman) The existence of God is a question that people have debated, and questioned for many centuries. It is perhaps, one of the most commonly asked, and in some cases, fought over topics! But why? You see, we as humans have been created with an innate spiritual connection to Allah, whether you like to admit it or not, this is within everyone. Essentially, its a "Fitrah" (A natural Instinct).  This Fitrah sometimes guides us to certain paths, for example, when you get 'the feeling' of doing a particular action or saying a particular word. This is no coincidence, nor is 'the universe' speaking to you. Rather, it is the fitrah (natural instinct) present within your very soul, that is used to guide you towards Allah.  A basic example is when you observe young children. You do not need to tell them that hurting another child is a bad thing, it's a natural instinct that tells them this. Or, to...

The significance of prayers

One who considers prayers to be insignificant and trivial is not from me. One who drinks intoxicants is not from me. By God! He shall never come close to me at the pool (of Kawthar) - Prophet Muhammad(pbuhhp) (Biharul Anwar, volume 63, page 495) Let's imagine you are going on a camping trip. The first thing you need to do after establishing where you're going and how, is to pack all the essentials. Yes, essentials may be subjective, however there are certain things which everyone unanimously agrees are an absolute must. Such as, shelter, food, protection. If you really want to experience camping, you won't find an area in which your accommodation is in a hotel room, rather, you would get yourself a tent and this would be your 'shelter' for the duration of your stay. When assembling the tent, one part of it we can all agree is of utmost importance. Such, that if you do not utilize or possess this, your tent is a complete failure and inefficient to it's...

Oh Husayn!

Alas! Oh Husayn, broken is my heart! Is it so, that your ark did depart? Whilst I await thee so patiently, In the journey of life full of calamities? Thou art, the ark of salvation mercy and love, Indeed, sent from the heavens above! What shall I do, born distant from thy days, Not blessed your beauty on which to gaze.... Whom shall I look up to, follow and learn? To be in your company - my heart does yearn! Oh how I wish my life to be set down for thee, To have answered your call.... replied to your plea... Labayka Ya Husayn.

These are the men

These are the men, whom surpass lions bravery, These are the men, whom fight so valiantly, yet have utmost humility, These are the men, whom show mercy on their enemy, These are the men, whom humbleness beautifies their personalities, These are the men, whom the moon shines from their face ever so bright! These are the men, whom the awaited has chosen, These are the men of Al Mahdi.

Anger

I want you to imagine this scenario. Of course, the details will not apply to everyone, but try to make it relative for the purposes of this blog. You’re at the gym and you’re having one of those days where you just feel on top of the world. You’re having a great workout and you’re breaking PB’s (personal bests). So, safe to say, you’re feeling pretty strong! You finish the workout on a good note and you leave the gym. You get into your car and drive off maybe dreaming of that amazing post workout meal you’re about to have, and in some cases, the attention you may get from your friends or social media to assume you’re just that strong! As you’re driving, someone cuts you off, admittedly, they were wrong but all in all, you’re safe and nothing happen. However, you’re the kind of person that is diagnosed with the famous “ Road Rage”, so, you do what anyone in this situation with this condition would do – roll down your window and give them a piece of your mind. Maybe you’ll...

What is success? How to define it?

If I were to ask you, " how do you define success? " What would you say? You'd probably say: " a huge abundance of wealth, multiple properties, luxury items, the ability to travel wherever and whenever ". To be fair, I wouldn't blame you if you thought this way. We as humans have our desires and we always desire the satisfaction of possession. That is, to own.  Question is, how do Ahlul Bayt(as) define it? Are we defining success in its true and proper sense? Is it any wonder that stress rates, suicidal rates and so on are more prevalent in first world countries as opposed to third world countries?  Why? Well according to the dictionary, the actual definition of Success is:  the accomplishment of an aim or purpose . It’s not " the possession of a vast amount of materialistic things " it's simply an accomplishment. You see, if we continue to place our perspective in that success is defined by extrinsic gains, when will we ...

In response to Khalil Gibran, "On Freedom"

A well written and constructed response to a portion of a poem written by Khalil Gibran, "On Freedom". A brother took the liberty upon himself to respond so eloquently and allowed us to share. --------------------------------------------------------- But even within these moments that you perceive as torment, we find the freedom in our struggle. For we are not bound by the shallow misery of this world, nor have our hearts rusted in the waves of life...  In the grief of my nights I find a voice of shimmering hope within my heart, one that speaks to a tune unbeknownst to man but sung amongst the angels. A praise so simple in its structure but so magnanimous in its deliverance..  A praise that yields success even if it be a mustard seed buried in a boulder..  What if for me and the few that worship at the gate of mercy by the fire of her majestic rays at the early hour of her rise and in the glory of her descent..  What if we hold on...
